What is colloidal silver?
Colloidal silver is the term used to describe tiny silver particles suspended in a liquid.
Due to their small size, they will not be removed by a normal filtration process.
The size of silver particles in colloidal silver can vary, but some are so tiny that they are referred to as "nanoparticles." This means that they are smaller than 100 nm in size and invisible to the naked eye.
Unlike silver, which is a natural chemical, colloidal silver is produced using a generator.
Before the invention of the refrigerator, it was common practice to pour a silver coin into a container of milk as a preservative because silver was known to inhibit the growth of bacteria and other unwanted organisms.
Why do we call it "ionic colloidal silver"?
The really effective ingredient in any silver solution is the positively charged silver ions (cations), which are always present in electrolyte-produced silver solutions. Studies done in the past have shown that pure colloidal silver, where silver powder was mixed with water, showed virtually no effect. In contrast, almost all medical and technical research focuses on the effect of silver ions. The only function of colloidal solution particles is to release silver ions. However, the amount of silver ions released in many cases is not enough to achieve the maximum possible result. Therefore, the ratio of positively charged silver ions should be as high as possible during the production of the fresh solution. The use of high quality distilled water reduces the tendency of the silver to adhere, resulting in the predominance of the silver element, thus giving a stronger color to the solution. Important: The ratio of ions - particles is shifted in favor of silver ions, as a result of which a strong metallic taste can be observed. Due to the high proportion of effective silver ions, a strong efficacy emerges.
How does colloidal silver work?
Colloidal silver has antibacterial and antiseptic action.
It is unknown exactly how the colloidal silver works. However, research shows that it attaches to proteins in the bacterial cell walls, destroying their cell membranes (1-3). This allows silver ions to pass into the cells, where they can affect the metabolic processes of bacteria and damage their DNA, leading to cell death.
What are the benefits of colloidal silver?
Colloidal silver is generally known to have antimicrobial effects. Due to this action it is associated with a number of uses, such as:

Studies with test tubes have shown that colloidal silver can kill a wide range of bacteria (4-6).
Colloidal silver nanoparticles have been found to have antibacterial activity against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria (7). In addition, the antibacterial action of antibiotics such as penicillin G, amoxicillin, erythromycin, clindamycin, and vancomycin may be enhanced when used with colloidal silver (8).
Amazing is the ability of colloidal silver to control antibiotic-resistant superbugs. Dr. Larry C. Ford, while working at UCLA Medical School in the 1980s, documented more than 650 different pathogens that cause disease that were destroyed in a matter of minutes when exposed to small amounts of silver (9).
Due to this action it is used in some health care products such as wound creams, wound dressings and medical equipment (10).

Widely used to control sinus infections, colloidal silver can benefit humans as a nasal spray, according to a study published in the International Allergy and Rhinology Forum in 2014 (15).
A recent 2018 study published in Frontiers in Microbiology found that nasal washes with colloidal silver, when used twice daily for 10 days, are safe and effective for patients with chronic sinusitis (16).
